CANDIED ORANGES

I decided I wanted to make candied oranges to top my Vegan Cardamom Cake. I had never made them before but they were so easy to make and add a beautiful natural touch to any recipe. I wanted mine to be stiff candied oranges perfect for topping and decorating desserts. These were absolutely perfect, let's get into it!

INGREDIENTS

- 1 cup Water

- 1 cup Granulated Sugar

- 1 Orange

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Slice your orange about 1/4 inch thick. This should make about 8 slices depending on your orange.

  2. This step is optional to get rid of some bitterness: Boil your slices in a couple cups of regular water for a 5-10 minutes.

  3. In a large pot, bring the 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar up to a simmer.

  4. Transfer your oranges to the large pot.

  5. Simmer the oranges until translucent, about 40 minutes.

  6. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees F or your ovens lowest temperature.

  7. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet spaced so they are not touching and bake for 3 hours, flipping every hour. This will make it so the oranges are firm and can hold their structure. If you want softer oranges skip this step entirely!

  8. They will last on the counter about a week or in the fridge for a month. You can even dip them in chocolate and sprinkle with a little sea salt!

I chose to put them on a cake as edible decor! This is the Vegan Orange Cardamom Cake that I have posted here if you're interested.
