So we made it to Copenhagen! If you missed my post about the first leg of the trip in Amsterdam, check it out here.
We had to be at the airport bright and early, literally before anything was open and the first few passengers to enter. We learned how interesting the airports were over here. Basically, placing the passengers in a room once they were about ready for boarding. This room was considered our Gate and we couldn't leave once we entered. It was different from what I was used to so just worth noting.
Also, we did our best to be prepared for TSA and all the rules, knowing we only had carry-ons. Somehow Katie had one item thrown away for not being labeled...which seemed wrong. It was a liquid bottle in her liquid bag that was very clearly smaller than 1 fl. oz. soooo... yea.
Our flight was through EasyJet and it wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. Would I do it again for a short flight? Yes. Did we wait longer than our initial take off time locked into this "gate" with no information and no plane? Yes. We ended up taking off like 20-30 minutes later than anticipated but we landed at a very similar time.
I have to say before getting into everything, the currency here was the Danish Krone. We were basically spending monopoly money everywhere, unable to convert on the spot. It was a little exciting living this way, I will say, but not so much when we looked at our bank accounts when we got home haha.
We stayed at Generator Copenhagen, it was the perfect hostel and location, I highly recommend. Everything was soooo walkable from here.
DAY ONE
Our first stop was Gasoline Grill, it's a really popular burger spot and it was really good! We also had this at the airport before leaving on the last day. I definitely recommend trying this place. It satisfies the burger craving and has a lot of options.
After our quick bite we ran over to Andersen & Maillard Bakery. We wanted to buy everything in the shelf but stuck to just four things and coffees. I would have gone back here everyday if we were staying longer.
After getting our coffees and treats, we set off to explore and walk around the city and canals. Let me just say, people here are soooo stylish. Really made me want to step up my game when I got back home lol.
Since we arrived with no set plan but just general ideas, we thought booking a canal tour would be perfect. We walked up to the canal and booked with Stromma Canal Tours Copenhagen. We got to turn off our brains and just take in the beautiful sights.
For dinner that night we went to Fabro. It was honestly unreal and I cannot recommend it more. We ordered a bottle of wine, which turned out to be a pitcher. This pitcher was I kid you not like 10+ glasses of wine. Only 3 of us were splitting it and it was never ending, which for the price was well worth it.
The night we ate here it was really cold and windy so waiting outside for our "turn" in line was a bit brutal. You basically write your name and they go down the line to seat people. The restaurant maybe only seats like 20 people indoors, so considering the weather everyone was hoping for inside seats. So I would assume in general you should prepare to wait! Also, if you leave for a drink at the bar they will skip you entirely (we saw it happen and the family just added their names at the bottom of the list again!).
DAY TWO
On this day our girl Maria fell ill and needed to stay in and sleep for most of the day. We set off for the day and began with coffee, kombucha, and pastries at Hart Bageri on the steps of Frederik's Church, otherwise known as Marble Church.
I was really excited to find a place with kombucha and a savory sausage pastry, as opposed to all the sweets I had been having. A slow morning with a walk through the city and enjoying pastries on church steps... like could you even imagine something better?!
Next, we walked over to the Design Museum. I hiiiiiiiighly recommend stopping here. We spent a few hours here really taking every exhibit in. I found it to be really insightful, interesting, and also really beautiful to look at.
After the musuem we walked over to Broens Street Food in the heart of Christianshavn. We decided we wanted to try as much food as we could, so we each bought a meal and split it all amongst each other.
We tried Poulette, District Tonkin, and Hija de Sanchez. I sadly don't have a photo of the Beef Rice Noodle Soup we got at District Tonkin but it was really good. Everything we had was good! At Poulette the fries were surprisingly spicy and really got our noses going, this is from girls with a high spice tolerance! The tacos were also delicious. If you're in Europe craving Mexican food I think this is a solid option.
Across from the street food area there happened to be a pop-up thrift market which had men and women's clothes, shoes, and accessories.
Next it was time to head back to our hostel to grab Maria for dinner. Along the way we stopped at Kastberg's for some unreal ice cream. I got the Sea Buckthorn Sorbet, don't ask me what that is. But it was SO good!
For our night time entertainment we wanted to head to the Meatpacking District (Kødbyen), which has breweries and restaurants. We did anticipate it being slow because we were going on a Sunday but we had hope it would be a little busy. This was the one place we were going where we had to take public transportation.
We were in for a small train ride so we decided to all split some street dogs. The man at the cart next to Mojoe Kitchen and Bar was so incredibly patient and kind, loved him and his help.
We had the french (fransk) hot dog, the one with a baguette type of "bun" and a classic danish hot dog with all the toppings. I liked them both and think you gotta try them if you're visiting!
So sadly it was not very "live" but we still had a great time and delicious food! We ate dinner at Gaza Grill. It was absolutely delicious and the perfect light but filling meal. I highly recommend visiting. After dinner we stopped at Mikkeller Warpigs for some beer and to chit chat before going home for the night.
DAY THREE
Day three started at BUKA, where I got the Berries & Cream Croissant. Wow wow wow, stunning. We ended up heading to breakfast and just holding onto our pastries as a snack. Once, I took a bite though, it was perfection. I highly recommend going to BUKA, we went to the one in Nytorv 3 but they have multiple locations.
Okay, so studio x kitchen. If you want a unique breakfast experience, you must come here. We came specifically because we wanted the Nduja Eggs. I got an oat latte and kombucha with my dish and was soooo happy.
We then had a moment to put down our pastries in the hostel before heading to Amalienborg Palace for the Changing of the Guard ceremony at 11 a.m.
The Danish Royal Guard march from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Palace where the full Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place from September to April.
After that we actually ventured over to Rosenborg Castle and walked the gardens surrounding it. We decided not to go through the castle itself due to being so exhausted but it looked really interesting! We opted to sit on a bench in the garden and listen to some facts online about the castle.
Up next we went to Wedo, I was seriously craving something fresh to hopefully heal how sick I was starting to feel. It reminded me a lot of Sweetgreen like in LA.
The last thing we had planned for the day was a Walking Tour through Copenhagen and Christianshavn.
We found a tip based walking tour and really loved the experience. There are so many different tours but we took a 90 minute one that ended just before Christiania. I highly recommend this company, we really enjoyed our tour and the information we learned!
Once our walking tour ended we were told visiting Christiania would be safe and a worthwhile sight to see. Our guide gave us some short history on the town and it was fascinating to learn about the free town. Our walk through the town was short as a lot of businesses were closing but I definitely think it was impactful to visit.
At this point of the day I was exhausted and just wanted to sit with a glass of wine. My dear friends made it a point to see Noma. It is a renowned restaurant, currently closed, that was featured on The Bear.
DAY FOUR
Day four started with locking our luggage up in the hostel lockers for the afternoon so we could explore after checking out and before our flight.
The last thing we did in Copenhagen was climb the Stairway to Heaven located inside The Church of Our Savior. I was getting sick on this day and it was rough to say the least. We walked all the way there, about 20 minutes and then up the 400 stairs. While I was struggling and a little miserable, thank you Katie for putting up with me, it was worth it.
The stairs are super steep and it is very windy up top. Do what you will with that information when it comes to what you wear and how you prepare.
After this we headed back to the hostel to collect our things and head to the airport for our 4 p.m. flight... or so we thought.
Again, if you missed my post all about Amsterdam, check it out here. Stay tuned for the next post about our time in Ireland!
